This product is the g10w20 ("grade 10 week 20") Enduring Issue essay from my collection that has been modified for special education. The documents in the essay have been re-written in plain English and confirmed to be in the Lexile range of 800L-900L (a 4th-5th grade readability). Readability was calculated using Lexile Free Readability tool.
Although this essay prompt is built with the special education student in mind, it could be a very good way to begin training students to write these essays for everyone. The modified essay prompt would remove reading comprehension as a variable in the training program.
The product includes the following:
1. The regular education version of the essay prompt
2. The teacher's version of the essay prompt with New York State Social Studies Framework references and a starter list of the "enduring issues" that students might see in the documents.
3. A grading rubric. This is my rubric, based on the NYSED performance level descriptors and elements borrowed from old Regents essay rubrics (at this writing the new rubric is not available).
4. The modified student version of the essay prompt where each document has been re-written at a 4th-5th grade reading level.
