This powerpoint is made to cover 2-3 class periods right at the beginning of your global history class. The first part of the ppt is a review of classroom rules, norms and expectations. It also includes warm up activities that teachers can use to get students acclimated to their study of geography and world history. Included in the first half of the ppt is: A warm up activity that can be done on scraps of paper and discussed, an overview of the topics students will learn about in global history, a timeline that shows BC/ AD, a name game that you can play with your class on the first day, a snapshot from the teachers syllabus about classroom norms, a video showing student bad behavior that you can use a talking point and more.
The second half the ppt is a review of basic geography. In the ppt are two maps- a map showing just continents and oceans (MAP A) and a political map (MAP B). Map A can be used as a pre-assessment to see if students know basic continents and oceans. When you buy this lesson, you can use MAP A and either include numbers on the handout and spaces for the students to write in their answers, or you can have them label right on the handout.
The ppt then goes over each continent and ocean using animations. Students like this because they can see if they got it right and try to guess before it shows up. Map B can be used to see if they can find different countries around the world. The handout and ppt also have a few additional lessons and prompts.
Students can color in their maps, add additional labels etc. The purpose of this lesson is to give students a basic understanding of world geography before diving into the meat of world history. Enjoy!
