I developed this lesson as the ninth in a series for a survey-style Global History course for summer school that was intended to assist students succeed at the August Regents. Through the lens of the question, "What are you willing to die for?", students are introduced to the historical background of the Crusades and the motivations that led Europeans to fight in them. Lesson includes information about the Black Plague. The lesson culminates in a perspective writing, challenging students to adopt the role of someone or something involved in the Crusades. The PowerPoint and lesson plan are attached, including a timeline of the key events of the Crusades.
