Overview: This resource is a menu of activities and projects all related to the concept of injustice. The choices infuse technology, the arts, and of course critical and creative thinking. In addition, students are encouraged to create their own "combo" or custom dish. The "appetizer" is for all students. However, they choose their own "entrees," "side dishes," and "desserts." Note: The "memorial" item tells students to see their teacher for a packet. That packet will be available in my store very soon!
Suggestions: This resource is ideal for a thematic ELA unit or social studies unit. I suggest that students receive the menu and rubric at the beginning of the unit and work towards their finished products throughout. Provide flexible timelines and/or due dates to decrease your workload and to keep it authentic for all students. There is a modified version of this menu in my store which I used in my general class.
How I used it: I created this menu for an honors-level grade 7 ELA class. We were beginning a thematic unit based on global injustice. The curriculum was focused Jewish Holocaust, and I wanted to bring in additional examples of genocide to emphasize how it has recurred throughout human history. Students received the menu and rubric at the beginning of the unit. This way, they worked on their selected projects along the way rather than at the end of the unit. In addition, I encouraged students to modify the menu items or create their own based on their interests. The only requirements were that they honor the theme of global injustice and get my approval regarding the rigor of their choices.
