Globalization, Trade, and Poverty: Crash Course Economics Video Analysis with Key- This is a 10 page document that contains a video analysis assignment and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 36 questions based on The Crash Course Economics video: Globalization, Trade, and Poverty.

This assignment will ask students to go to YouTube and watch the Crash Course video: Globalization, Trade, and Poverty. The video will first introduce students to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and how they were designed to fight global poverty. The difference between poverty in the U.S. and the developing world is noted and the definition of extreme poverty is expanded upon. The overall decline in global poverty is analyzed as is how technology, most importantly the cell phone, is helping people around the developing world earn more. The causes of globalization, outsourcing, and the winners and losers of globalization are then covered. The arguments of opponents to globalization- abuse of workers, child labor, and environmental degradation- are also covered. The challenges for the future of globalization is then reviewed, primarily that the planet cannot sustain a growing consumer culture. The video concludes by looking at the work of Muhammad Yunus and his microloans program in Bangladesh. It is highlighted to show how the worlds poorest people can lift themselves out of poverty when given the chance to participate in the global economy.

This video analysis can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan. Students love the independence of this assignment by getting to use laptops, Chromebooks, or even their own cellphones to watch the video. Crash Course videos tend to move fast so students often find success if they watch the video through once before going back to pause/play to find the answers to all of the questions.
