Latitude/Longitude iPad Activity:
Help your students explore the meaning of latitude and longitude using iPads! This activity uses the free app, Google Earth, to find the exact location of cities around the world. The activity was created to help students better understand the latitude and longitude of a place is its exact location on Earth. Most maps have even measurements. However, the reality is the exact latitude and longitude of a location goes even further than whole numbers!
Depending on your resources, this activity could be done in a computer lab, with laptops, using one iPad, small groups with each group having an iPad, or individually with each student having their own iPad.
Using Google Earth provides the opportunity to discuss what the land looks like, what resources/products could be found in this area based on the observation of the land, and what jobs people might have in this location have and why.
Social Studies Common Core Grade Span 3-5: Geography: Understand the use of geographic tools to locate and analyze information about people, places, and environment.
**NOTE: I use this activity with the Latitude/Longitude Skill reading from our social studies series. This takes place of the worksheet with the curriculum. Students still practice with maps in their books as well. This activity helps take the lesson one step further by adding a technology piece.
