"Glory Be" by Augusta Scattergood is a historical fiction novel that will get your students really thinking! This story, which takes place in Mississippi in the heat of the Civil Rights Movement, will have your readers thinking critically and making connections with history like never before.
This novel study has 27 pages of rigorous student work! Designed with critical literacy in mind, the questions for each reading section (1 or 2 chapters, depending on chapter length) have students considering multiple perspectives and character insight, writing "as" other characters, collecting evidence for inferences, and supporting their thinking in a variety of ways. The novel has been divided into 24 reading assignments, accompanied by a theme analysis mini-project, pre-reading research, and a pre-reading journal assignment. Extension project activities have also been included.
The answer key for this novel study also provides discussion questions and in-depth explanations of how to encourage critical responses from students. Many questions require students to make their own judgments and inferences, and there is often no "right" answer. However, detailed responses and suggestions are given for each question in every reading assignment. CCSS alignment provided for every student work page (4th-6th grade).
This novel study is great for guided reading, literature circles, book clubs, Civil Rights unit studies, critical literacy studies, whole-group or independent instruction, and even homework. Get kids thinking while reading a book they will LOVE!
