The movie "Glory," starring Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington, depicts the sacrifices and bravery of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment, an all African American regiment, during the Civil War.
This writing assignment is cross-curricular with U.S. History / Social Studies and Language Arts / English.
The writing prompt is, "Choose Colonel Shaw or Private Tripp. Is this character a hero? Define what a hero is, then give 2 specific examples to justify your decision."
While watching, students will take notes in a graphic organizer on the heroic or nonheroic actions of Shaw and Tripp. After the movie, they will reflect and discuss to develop their thesis statement. Finally, they will write their response.
