Back by popular demand... it’s GO BANANAS: Sight Word Edition. ☺
1. Print all game pages on white cardstock using colored ink. (You have the option of printing a “Go Bananas” back on the cards by returning the card pages to your printer and printing the backs separately.)
2. Laminate all pages.
3. Cut out the cards and get ready to play!
Game play is simple and FUN! Mix and stack ALL of the cards (bananas, banana splits, and banana peels) in a pile in the center of the table. There are 102 of the MOST COMMON sight words included in this set, so you can pick and choose exactly which words on which you want your students to focus. How’s that for some differentiation!? I have also included 6 blank banana cards in case you have some other words you want your students practicing.
Students take turns drawing the top card and reading the word. If the player is correct, s/he keeps that card and play continues around the circle! If s/he is unable to read the word, the card is returned to the bottom of the pile and play, again, continues around the table. If the player gets a “banana split” card, s/he can take a banana card from another player and add it to his/her own pile! The game continues on and on and on until someone draws one of the “banana peel” cards. Once a banana peel is drawn, the game immediately stops and all players count their cards. The player with the most cards is the winner!
Students LOVE this game because it’s pretty entertaining and things can get a little crazy moving so fast (a “good” crazy, though!!!). I love it because it’s an engaging way to get my kindergarteners to practice their sight words during center time and have some independent FUN away from me while doing so! Plus, I never hear “I’m done!” because the game can be played again and again!
I hope your kids love this game as much as mine do.
Go bananas! ☺
