Go, Dog. Go! Cross-Curricular Breakout
is a breakout activity for early readers designed for use with the classic book Go Dog Go!
By P. D. Eastman. I created this activity for my own son when he was able to read the book by himself. It involves phonics, literacy (sight words), counting, shapes and related skills. This would be a good last day of school activity for first grade or first day of school activity for second grade. This breakout activity is designed for use with a Breakout Edu kit or similar. Go, Dog. Go! Cross-Curricular Breakout
is brand new for 2018!
What is the prep?
Prep involves printing and setting locks to open a breakout box, and making shapes around specific words in your copy of Go, Dog. Go!
using an invisible ink pen. You will also have to hide a key in your classroom. There are optional hint cards and ticket cards you can print and cut out. In addition optional ideas are also provided in the instructions.
Will I have to buy anything extra?
This activity is designed for use with a Breakout Edu kit. The kit can be purchased online from breakoutedu.com or the individual components can be purchased separately (see below). If you do not have one of these locks, you can easily skip the corresponding puzzle. A no-lock edition is coming soon. Follow me on TpT to get an update when it is ready!
What supplies are needed?
Paper (8.5in x 11in)
An invisible ink pen
A UV light
A BreakoutEdu kit or these components:
• Three-digit number lock
• Four-digit number lock
• Directional lock
• Five-letter word lock
• Key lock (padlock)
What will my students do?
Students will be given a box with five locks attached. They will then work together (ideally in groups of three to four) to solve five puzzles related to the book Go, Dog. Go!
Each puzzle provides the solution to one of the five locks on the box. If you are a homeschooler, a single child can complete this, but it may take longer and require more hints.
The puzzles are:
Students will identify specific pages in Go, Dog. Go!
And count the number of Dogs in specific situations. This puzzle involves counting and subsets (e.g. not all the dogs are on the ladder) or in cars (page 15). It also involves turning to a specific page.
Shapes and Sight Words:
Students will find specific shapes drawn around number in Go, Dog. Go!
. This puzzle involves shape recognition, attention to detail, growth mindset, and provides sight reading and number formation practice.
Directions Sight Words:
Students will turn to specific pages in Go, Dog. Go!
that have direction words. This puzzle involves attention to detail and sight reading practice.
Sight Word Missing Letters:
Students will complete the missing letters in sight words (with images as a guide). This puzzle allows students to practice phonics and letter formation.
Students will use a simple cipher (provided) to reveal the location of a key hidden in the classroom. Two versions of this puzzle are included. This puzzle involves attention to detail, writing letters, and reading sight words.
How long does this take?
About 30-40 minutes.
