Go Make Words! Cards:

100 Go Make Words! Game Cards (letter distribution):
A-8, B-2, C-2, D-4, E-12, F-2, G-2, H-6, I-7, J-1, K-1, L-4, M-2, N-6, O-7, P-2, Q-1, R-6, S-6, T-9, U-3, V-1, W-2, X-1, Y-2, Z-1

All Go Make Words! game cards are marked with point values, as well as stars symbolizing point values, ranging from one to five points. These point values are based on letter frequency in the English language. More frequently used letters have lower point values and less frequently used letters have higher point values.

The Go Make Words! game cards have been thoughtfully designed. There are 100 - 2” x 3 ½” cards. This smaller sized MINI cards makes them easier for little hands to hold. The cards are based on English language letter frequency, which is very important. That means that there will be many more of the most common letters used to make words like the letters “e”, “s”, “t”, and fewer of less used letters like “z” and “q”. For example there is only one letter z, and there are twelve letter e’s. This is a great improvement over other card sets that have an equal amount of each letter. Why on earth would anyone need the same number of z’s as e’s? Go Make Words! solves this problem and now there are more of the letters you need and less of the letters you don’t.

Each card is color coded for point values ranging from one point to five points. The most common letters are one point, the least common are five points. The letter points can be added to give words a value. For example, the word f-u-n is worth six points. The f is worth three points, the u is worth two points, and the n is worth one point. The lower right hand corner of the card even shows a set of stars, which represent the point value as well. A five-point letter such as the letter z shows five stars in the lower right hand corner. This helps with student practicing early addition skills. These point values are used in variations of the standard game.

Go Make Words! Game Play:

Unlike many classroom games, which have complicated directions and many parts and pieces, Go Make Words! is easy to set-up, easy to play and easy to clean up. Best of all, it doesn’t take a lot of time to play a game. If you have two minutes you can play a “Quick” game of Go Make Words! The “Quick” game version of Go Make Words! is the game in its simplest form. All you do is pass out all the cards equally to the players and set a timer for two minutes. Players make words until time expires. The player who has made the most words wins. A variation of the game would be the player with the highest point total wins. That’s the great thing about Go Make Words!, there are over 100 game variations and ideas included in the download. With so many ways to play the game its can always be fresh and exciting.

The “Standard” game version of Go Make Words! is more challenging. Each player holds 6 cards in their hands, which they use during each turn to make new words or to add to previously created words. When the cards in the draw deck have been completely depleted the game ends and players add up all of the points of the words they have created during the game.

Go Make Words is a game that can even be played by a single player, which is perfect for students who finish their works early. In the single player version, the player selects 25 cards from the top of the deck. Then the player creates as many words as they are able from the selected cards. They may also want to record the words they create on a list to be checked. You could even have your students use their weekly spelling list with the go make words cards. Have them work with the weekly words and practice math skills by adding up the point value of each spelling word. There are so many ways to use the Go Make Words! letter frequency game cards. I’m sure creative teachers will discover many more☺.
