This handout teaches students what a goal is and why it is important for people to set goals. It has students create a goal for the particular class (ex. English class), a goal for high school in general, and a personal goal (learning to cook, scoring during a lacrosse game, etc.). It also has students explain why they are setting each of the goals. At the bottom, it provides students with goal examples. Afterwards, I have students write in their journals about how they plan to set each goal. Additionally, students create notecards or "mini posters" with their names and their goals. They can take creative license with these. I display them in the classroom throughout the year and we refer back to them each marking period to check-in on their progress. This is a great activity to start the school year! It also helps students really think about their goals.
