***BLACK LINE LABELS ONLY for Opinion Writing K
As a teacher of writing, I found that because kids are developing at different stages and have differing needs, the writing process needed to be broken down for some more than others. With that being said, I have created writing goals that cover content and conventions/mechanics of writing. I have also included more goals than you will need for your kids to be successful. These goals are adapted from Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study, Unit 4 Opinion Writing. This unit focuses on how children have a strong voice and how writing can cause change to happen. The unit starts off with kids writing pieces that they have a strong opinion about whether it be a favorite book or another topic. As the unit progresses, the children write about problems they see and their solutions for fixing the problem. My goals are aligned with CCSS and Calkins. While you do not need to own her program to use these goals nor follow CCSS., I would strongly suggest purchasing it! I love the program and it is used in my school in grades K-3! You can find it at the above link.
I print 1 sheet of 30 labels per child. I use Avery 5160 mailing labels. Depending on what your individual kids need, I take up to 2-3 labels at a time and adhere them to my students’ writing folders. Prior to writing and after my mini-lesson, I have the kids read over their labels. At the close of the workshop, they once again read over their goals to reinforce what they are working on and then the process starts again at the next workshop. I found that they are extremely effective at having the kids evaluate and reflect on their writing throughout the process, not just on the final product. Hopefully, you will find that as the rigors of the Common Core abound, these will assist you and your students in meeting those high standards.
Goals are written in first person and are as follows:
-talk, draw, and write about opinions
-write opinion in the beginning
-write idea and then say more
-have a last part or page
-tell opinion and tell why
-write everything about the topic on one page
-have details in pictures and words
-write a letter for sounds heard
-use the word wall
-spaces between words
-reading their own writing
-using lowercase letters
-using a capital
-adding more detail
-adding pictures that will help
-making a sign, letter, petition, song
-adding speech bubbles
-giving lots of reasons
-adding in an “..or else”
-meeting with writing partner
-having a vowel in every word
-using snap words
-finding a problem
-writing a lot each day
-giving a fix it idea
-using punctuation at the end of every sentence
-knowing who the audience is
-telling a story to get readers interested
-including important information
-showing big feelings in writing

As you can see you can adapt these goals to fit the writers and their varying needs in kindergarten.
***Please note that Calkins’ units are a progression and each builds upon the former. If you have purchased my labels for narrative writing or information writing goals, these labels are different and have different visuals. Some of the goals repeat from unit to unit but there are different visuals
These are also great for ELLs and resource kids because it is a visual reminder.
