After reading the story independently or hearing it as a read aloud, the students answer questions about the character the little blue engine in the story. The students then answer similar questions about themselves, setting a personal goal that they would like to accomplish. After completing these brainstorming/prewriting activities they will use a checklist to write a personal essay about a goal they would like to accomplish and how they will reach this goal. This center should be completed over several days. This product includes goal cards that can be used for a bulletin board. There is also a follow up activity for the students to do later in the year when they have had time to reach their goals. For the follow up activity the students re-read the story and then complete a question sheet on how they accomplished their goals and how this completion made them fell about themselves. The students use this questionnaire and a similar checklist to write another personal essay.
