Goal setting, reflection, and timely feedback are key ingredients when helping students to improve their writing. This form helps them to consider five common areas that emergent writers need to focus on, while also allowing them to set their own goals. There is a place to rank or prioritize goals, a place for students to reflect, and a place for teachers to offer feedback.
This form highlights these five areas of early writing skills: storytelling, vocabulary, readability through spelling, readability through handwriting, and punctuation use. There is also a blank spot for students to develop their own goal, allowing for extension and differentiation.
When using this process on a regular basis students learn to focus on specific areas of their writing progress, set goals, and track their growth while learning from feedback.
