Setting goals is an important life skill and produces greater educational achievement. This InclusionVision lesson plan introduces goal setting and perseverance for a classroom as a learning community. It uses the metaphor of a compass and the four cardinal directions to set academic, physical, social and emotional goals, fostering whole child development. The classroom goals remain up all year on a bulletin board and are revisited to reinforce the skills of maintaining a vision, persevering with an action plan, and applying corrective feedback. All examples can be edited to personalize the lesson plan to your classroom and students – or to tie the academic goal to a teacher performance task to ensure success. A parent letter is included for home-school communication, volunteer support and connections. Special education teachers can adapt the activity for use with individual children and tie the four directions to IEP goals.
