Engage your students during the month of November with this literature-based unit designed to build word power and writing skills.
Dav Pilkey's 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving and
Eve Bunting's A Turkey For Thanksgiving are perfect picture books to use to help young learners understand opinion and persuasive writing. Activities to review knowledge of synonyms and antonyms are also included, as are writing prompts about whether or not your students would have sailed on the Mayflower.
Be sure to peruse the product preview for a glimpse at some of the thematic worksheets that are included:
*Stellar Synonyms and Tasty Treats--Students brainstorm a list of synonyms for "delicious" and then write an opinion paragraph promoting their favorite food to feast on!
*Astonishing Antonyms--Students brainstorm a list of antonyms for "scared" and then write about what doesn't scare them!
*Turkey S.O.S.--Students brainstorm and write about places a turkey could hide and a disguise it could wear during November.
*To Sail or Not to Sail? Students respond to non-fiction texts they've read about the Pilgrims journey to America and debate whether or not they would have been adventurous or hardy enough to make the journey.
*Thankful and Thoughtful--Students write sentences using synonyms for "thankful" to express what people, things, opportunities, and blessings they are grateful to have in their lives.
Activities in this pack can be used as whole group lessons or kept at a literacy center station for independent practice. Be sure to check out this related holiday FREEBIE as well!
