This fun activity will help your students improve their vocabulary, practice synonyms, and hone an important writing skill. One of the most important skills that good writers use is word choice- using descriptive words to show the readers what is happening in the story.
Throughout the year, I work with my students to develop their vocabulary and encourage the usage of more descriptive words, and this is one of my students’ favorite activities.
Students work in pairs or in groups to find descriptive synonyms for words that you assign. They may use their knowledge of synonyms they've already learned, or you can provide a thesaurus. Once they've found the required number of descriptive synonyms, they construct word-choice turkeys!
The finished product makes a great classroom display that students can refer to during writing or a fantastic bulletin board. Includes both color and black and white options!
