Play is sometimes the most difficult skill to teach, especially using language. These visuals are created for that very reason. I've used a school set from Playmobil to teach basic concepts and vocabulary related to the classroom and the school day. I take pictures of the characters performing different actions and put them into a story. I like to read the story first and then review each page as I model the play step, using the language on the related page.
-A story about the school day which includes real images from the parts of the play set. The story is 7 pages in length.
-The story comes with two different sets of text. One facilitates sequencing steps to learn how to play with the set. The other is more narrative, so that kids can learn the language to use while performing each step. The phrases are printed on a separate sheet and can be cut out and used accordingly. I like laminating them and adding them to the page with velcro, so I can switch them out as needed.
-Two different visual schedules (3-step and 5-step) with pictures that you can add as you teach the steps.
This adapted story and its visual supports will change the way you teach play!
The book can be used with or without the playset.
