Do you have students who become anxious with going to school and/or experience separation anxiety? This product will help students overcome the anxiety associated with going to school. It will teach students the importance of attending school every day and provide them with some simple steps, including positive self-talk, to bravely face the school day with less or no stress. The Power Card Strategy is a visually based strategy used to connect an appropriate behavior or social skill to a child’s special interest (hero, cartoon character, role model). While the research has been done with children with Autism, this strategy can be used with any child who is struggling behaviorally. The idea is to have the child associate the desired behavior with their special interest rather than coming from the adult.
This particular story is centered around The Supersmart Team and their adventures of being heroes. It will be motivating for any student interested in superheroes or similar characters. If a student is not familiar with superheroes, you can research various hero characters with the student to build familiarity and determine if it would be exciting and motivating for your student.
This product includes the following materials:
1. The Power Card Story/Social Story:
Included is a two-page story describing how The Supersmart Team solve the problem and become the heroes by training every day with their Master to come up with the smartest plan to stop the villains. The story should be printed, and ideally students should read it each day. Depending on the grade and reading level, students might need to read the story with an adult.
2. The Power Card:
The Power Card is a small card with a picture of The Supersmart Team members that provides a recap of the strategies learned in the story. Following the initial reading of the story, the student is given the Power Card to keep. This card serves as a way to generalize the skill to new settings. This product includes four versions with different boy and girl superhero clip art options. Cards should be cut apart, laminated, and made available for the students to refer to throughout the school day.
