Do you have students who become anxious with going to school and/or experience separation anxiety? This product will help students overcome the anxiety associated with going to school. It will teach students the importance of attending school every day and provide them with some simple steps, including positive self-talk, to bravely face the school day with less or no stress. The Power Card Strategy is a visually based strategy used to connect an appropriate behavior or social skill to a child’s special interest (hero, cartoon character, role model). While the research has been done with children with Autism, this strategy can be used with any child who is struggling behaviorally. The idea is to have the child associate the desired behavior with their special interest rather than coming from the adult.
This particular resource is centered around The Super Smart Team and their adventures of being heroes. It includes the following components:
1. The Power Card Story (social story that includes 8 half sheet pages when printed):
A short story is included that describes how members of The Super Smart Team solve the problem and become the heroes. They are on time every day to train with their Master and come up with the smartest plan to stop the villains. The Super Smart Team teaches students the importance of attending school every day along with some strategies to reduce and eliminate anxiety. Ideally, the student should read the story individually or with an adult each day as a preventative approach. Another time to review the story would be when the student is exhibiting signs of anxiety with going into or remaining in the classroom.
2. The Power Card:
The power card is a small card with pictures that provides a recap of the strategies learned in the story. Following the initial reading of the story, the student is given the power card to keep. This card serves as a way to generalize the skill to new settings. Two boy and two girl versions of the power card are included. The card should be available for the student to refer to throughout the day.
BONUS: Specific steps and information are provided so that you can write your own power card story!
