It is 1846 and you and your family are traveling west. You decide to keep a journal of your adventure! This project is used after or during a unit study on Western Expansion.
Prior to the activity, I read one of the following chapter books: Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie or My America Westward to Home to provide students with background knowledge and diary samples. There is also a great picture book called: The Foul, Filthy, American Frontier. If you don't have time, I made a list of animals, plants, and hardships for you to share with the students.
Students are asked to create a cover and 7 entries including specific items in each. (ex. hardships or Native encounters).
My students love this activity! They like to create old-looking covers for their journals. A rubric is provided.
This is a small portion of our Westward Expansion Unit
If interested, I have questions and activities to go along with My America Westward to Home!
