This is a great way to incorporate "real world" application into a unit on rocks and minerals. I designed this for my 3rd graders and it would work well for 2nd-5th grade. Students walk around your school grounds in search of 3 different rocks. They write descriptions and properties of the rocks and create scientific drawings. Back in the classroom, students read descriptions of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks and attempt to decipher which of their rocks is which. An excellent way to reinforce these topics and get kids using higher order thinking skills!
