Product Description

Follow the design process to design and build a model of a wattle and daub hut; a common housing structure used during the gold rushes. You will receive:

  • Student work booklet (see below for details)
  • Poster of a windlass
  • KWL Chart
  • Oral Presentation guide and checklist so students can confidently share their work
  • Assessment Rubric for the oral presentation

Student Workbook. Each section has a checklist to help keep students on track.

The workbook comes in two formats: Option 1 shows an illustration of a windlass. Option 2 hides the key part of the illustration and provides a written description instead.

  • Front Cover
  • Pg 1: Task, description of the mining technique and materials list
  • Pg 2: Background research
  • Pg 3/4: Students design a windlass
  • Pg 5/6: Construction (paste in photographs of building process)
  • Pg 7: Evaluation (students evaluate their windlass model)
  • Pg 8: SWOT Analysis: analyse the use of the windlass on the goldfields
  • Pg 9: Procedure Text: students draft a procedure text explaining how to build their windlass
  • Pg 10: Extension options for those students wanting to continue the design process: redesign, reconstruct, re-evaluate, final copy of procedural text and four STEM related extension ideas.

**Note: some pages are left blank intentionally to provide students with extra room to show their thinking and designs.

Resources needed for this STEM project:

Ultimately you will decide what materials your students will have access to. Students may even be able to bring in some materials of their own. But as a minimum, students will need access to the following:

  • student work booklet (print as either A4 or A5)
  • adhesive (hot glue gun)
  • timber (pop sticks or twigs)
  • daub (mud or modelling clay)
  • bark (bark from a nearby tree. I used paper bark)
  • rocks (small stones/gravel)
  • canvas (calico)
  • stationary (pencils, paper, ruler, scissors etc)
