After the defeat of the Persians in 479 B.C.E., the city-state of Athens was in ruins. The Athenians were inspired to rebuild by a great leader named Pericles. Under his leadership, Athens entered a golden age, a period of great peace and wealth. Between 490 and 431 B.C.E., Athens was the artistic and cultural center of the world.
