This lesson focuses on how Athens enjoyed a golden age under the able statesman Pericles, a period of time which is often called the Age of Pericles. After the Persian Wars, Athens emerged as the most powerful city-state in Ancient Greece and due to its peace and prosperity, it experienced a flowering of cultural achievements.

It includes notes on what led to the golden age of Athens/Age of Pericles and discussion questions for students to answer and share (with an answer key provided). Also, it includes a graphic organizer for students to complete (with an answer key provided) to help them better understand how Athens became the cultural center of Ancient Greece by looking at its cultural achievements in: government, "classical" art and architecture, sports, philosophy, literature, and historical writing.
