I used these assignments when running a weekly Readers Workshop around the book Gone by Michael Grant. On Monday, students were put in small groups and each group was given a different assignment.
During reading that week, each group followed the assignment they were given. Each group stuck with the same assignment for approximately 5 chapters. After that, groups are switched and get a new assignment.
Assignments are Common Core standards based and include using Context Clues to determine meaning of words, inferring and predicting, keeping track of character traits and actions that reveal character traits, tracking conflict escalations for plot, and asking questions.
Students use post-its to keep track of what they find and stick their post-its on a designated wall in the classroom (also can use a big sheet of paper like a giant post-it or a bulletin board or have them put their post-its in a notebook). On Friday, each group is responsible for presenting their post-its to the class and explaining what they did that week.
This document gives you different group assignments for every set of 5 chapters from beginning to end of the book.
