These little puppies work wonders! Inform your students that you are going to be having a draw for a super-awesome prize. Explain that whenever they are doing something exceptionally well, or are on task, etc., they will receive a ticket to enter into the draw. Upon receiving the ticket students print their name on it, fold it up and go drop it in the big tub. I like to use a clear, 2 litre jug with an easy open flip-lid. Place it somewhere everyone can see it and watch it fill up!
To add a hint of math we talked about odds and probability. The more tickets you have in the draw, the better your chances are at getting picked. Students work hard to get these and it makes life quite pleasant in the classroom.
Helpful Hints: Print on different colours of bright paper, and use a Clear tub so everyone can watch it fill up. Set a date for the draw so students can really look forward to it.
I used this in grade 6 when I wanted students to silent read directly after recess, it only took about 2 or 3 days of handing out these tickets out, to those who did not need reminders, for everyone to hop on board and know to read quietly right after recess.
Hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
