Great beginner reading poem. NOTE: poem is sang or read to the tune of "Happy Birthday to You". This is a fun shared reading poem, in which you can insert each child's name (I used index cards I had prewritten with each of their names) and sing/read as a class. I start off putting poem on sentence strips and reading whole group as a class. We find the sight words too and practice orally using the sight words in sentences.
LITERACY CENTER IDEAS: Then I give this poem to students to go into their poetry or reading journal. Students then have to find the sight words we discussed (circling or underling with a yellow crayon). They also have to draw a picture to go with the poem in their journal, and finally they of course practice reading independently or to a friend.
You may also have students practice mixing up and putting the sentence strips (poem) back in order as a small group. Also you can put the poem on anchor chart paper, laminate, then have students read and find sight words with dry erase markers.
