When I was in school, my teachers gave me writing assignments but never actually taught me HOW to write. They would say things like "sounds awkward" or "say that in a different way" but never gave me concrete or practical suggestions I could implement into my editing process. I was determined to be a different kind of writing teacher. This powerpoint focuses on writing style more than grammar although through it, students will see how understanding grammar is critical to good writing style. This powerpoint also gives students opportunities to practice the techniques they learn in class and encourages them to find their own unique style. In my experience students enjoy having the freedom in class to experiment with their style and get immediate feedback from their peers and teacher.
This week long intensive will address how to build a good sentence, a parallel sentence, a figurative sentence, a concise sentence, and a good paragraph. (You can also break this up, covering a section just one day a week for 4 or 5 weeks.) These are the building blocks for well-written essays in the future.
