Product Description
This unit was developed to be used in a first grade classroom. I used this with my own first grade intervention class. It can be modified to work in Kindergarten or second grade as needed. Begin this lesson with an introduction of the vocabulary. Display the vocabulary words on the word wall. Each vocabulary word has a corresponding picture to aid in meaning recognition. Four mini books are included that break the unit up into four areas:
• Goods and Services
• Jobs
• Buyers and Sellers
• Factories
The mini books are assembled by cutting them out and stapling in page order. There are a few activity sheets that go along with the theme:
• Goods and Services matching sheet
o Students cut out pictures and match it to either the goods column or services column
• Jobs writing activity
o Students draw a picture of the job they would like to have and write about it
• Saving Writing activity
o Students draw a picture about what they would like to save for and write about it.
• Market and Goods activity
o Students look at each type of market and write what goods would be purchased there.
• Earning writing sheet
o Students write about ways they could earn money now.
• Money diagram
o Students use their knowledge of how money goes from person to person to cut and paste pictures into the right part of the diagram.
• Factory Graphic Organizer
o Students work in pairs to brain storm different items that are made in a factory. The work together to fill in and label a graphic organizer.
Included assessment can be given when unit is complete. This unit is designed to take about six 40 minute lessons with the assessment given on the 7th day. This can be modified depending on the level of your class. This will take me anywhere from 7-9 days depending on the day.
I developed this unit with the Common Core in mind. The importance of informational text and non-fiction reading is stressed within the Common Core through-out the grade levels. This presents material in a way that students do not seem threatened by, unlike a large text book. Also, writing is incorporated quite often as this is such an important and developing skill in first grade.
