Trading Cards - for each marketplace stall to give to the buyers
Rupee Bills - I printed them on coloured paper to represent whatever value I wanted. (1 rupee, 10 rupees for easy counting)
Marketplace Menu - goods and services prices
Bank Values - current trading value of natural resources
Graphic Organizer - needs and wants tracking sheet, questions about their experiences with quality of life to be used as reference for the whole class discussion.
Day 1: Half the class were marketplace sellers. The other half were marketplace buyers.
Day 2: Switched sellers and buyers.
I had brown paper bags numbered. Inside were items that represented the national exports/imports of India. (eg: gems represented diamonds, toy cars represented petroleum, coloured craft string represented silk, etc.)
To make it random, they rolled a 20 sided die and that number was the bag number they were given. They had to tell me if the item inside was an import or export before trading it in for the bank's current price of their item.
Using the Needs & Wants graphic organizer, they had to ensure all their needs were met before purchasing wants.
When trading was finished we discussed as a class the impact on a person's quality of life.Goods and Services Trading Game
