I was inspired by the concept of Google 20% Time –some people call this “genius hour” and sometimes it is referred to as a “passion project.” I use this specifically in ELA for AP Lang/Comp. Because my students are exposed to argumentative writing, rhetorical analysis, and synthesis, I wanted to make sure they were also exposed to narrative writing in which they build their voice. These blogs are a passion project for them but it takes a life of its own as their writing develops through purpose, tone, and audience.
I have seen it implemented in College Prep classes and honors classes alike. I am going to explain how it works in my class, but feel free to manipulate the materials to best suit your students’ needs. ☺
