Product Description
This lesson uses a story within a story from Jon Krakauer's "Where Men Win Gory" to convey the importance of critical textual analysis, and the methods and questions required to effectively use this practice. The focus of the Case Study is the reporting of events concerning Jessica Lynch, an early POW during the Operation Enduring Freedom campaign in 2003. The inaccurate reporting of the story is prefaced by students first reading the events according to Krakauer and then asking critical question themselves before looking at the Washington Post version of events. Students are then guided to considering textual bias and motivations of different parties involved and how that impacted the details of their reporting. Students are asked to consider bigger questions within this study and are challenged to think about the motivations that all news sources and institutions have when reporting events. This works well for any high school history or English literature class to begin the year. I use it in my Honors Geography course (9th) and AP European History course (10th).
