Use the quick start template and instructions to save time and reduce frustrations for you and your students. This pdf links to a Google Sites template that I created for students to use as a starting point for creating a website. Before offering the quick start template, I found that students would be confused by some of the default features in a Google Site, which lead to frustrations and poorly formatted results. I used what I learned as a former Web Design instructor to modify Google Site default settings to create a basic design that is stripped of unnecessary features. The template starts students off with a blank canvas for a website, with a fixed-width content area that is set to a traditional size which is well suited for reading. Instructions include sections to guide students through the basic steps for creating their site, adding content, and exploring where to access features such as changing themes or color schemes. The handout is labeled in an outline format that facilitates communication about which step you are on during group instruction, or assists with identifying the specific procedure which a student needs clarified.
My years of experience and hours of exploration in Google Sites are condensed into a single page with a URL for the quick start template and six sections of basic instructions.
Instructions include sections on:
Setting up the Site
Editing Web Pages
Creating a New Page (and adding to navigation)
Managing Other Features (guidance on where to look)
Returning to Edit Your Site
