One of my favorite things to do at the start of the year is to show students how ridiculous Google Translate can make you sound. Youtube is full of parodies of songs translated and then retranslated by Google Translate. One of my favorites to show the students is from The Tonight Show with Miley Cyrus singing "Shape of You: aka "Your Body's Curves."(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKxaxrxVMsg). "Oh I like that cadaver" just doesn't sound quite as nice haha! (You can show the whole video, or just one or two of the songs)
Afterwards, I let my students try it out for themselves, making it into a game. They can work individually or as a team but they must find the lyrics to a popular, school-appropriate song and put them through the translator and then back again, they must do that four different times through four languages, because then it get's REALLY weird. Then they write the new lyrics in the second box. Once they have finished, they can analyze how and why they think the song's message changed. The game part comes when the students read their changed lyrics to the class to see who can guess the original song. It's a lot of fun and the students love how goofy some of their favorite songs end up.
