Students are asked to argue that a movie that fits within the Gothic literary tradition* (dark atmosphere, stock characters, etc...). Excellent application of components of a literary genre to real life. The outline walks students through the components of a four paragraph essay and includes a basic fill-in-the-blank thesis statement**. Works very well with reluctant writers.
*I always brainstormed a list of appropriate movies with the students before handing out the actual assignment.
**To differentiate, I allowed students to reword the thesis and transitions to better fit their arguments. Students more comfortable with their own voice and writing abilities did so successfully.
