Description

This resource has 3 parts: 11 photographs of gourds, printable pages with writing prompts about the gourds, and an online paperless version of the writing prompts about the gourds.

You can use this resource remotely in 2 ways:

a) When teaching synchronously or asynchronously online, use the Google Drive version.

b) For students to do on their own: Photocopy the pages with small images in the top left corner accompanied by writing prompts that you want students to use and email/send the material home. Alternatively, if students have printers, email the pages to them and tell them to print the work out themselves. Tell students what to do and have them email/send you their work when they’ve completed it. Use the included rubric to correct students’ work.

There are 4 prompts that let students practice:

* Narrative writing,

* Descriptive writing,

* Persuasive writing,

* Compare-and-contrast writing, and

* 1 prompt that asks students to write and solve a math problem about a gourd.

An assessment rubric is provided so you can easily evaluate your students' work. Explanatory information, a list of the ELA Common Core standards addressed, and directions for accessing the online materials are also included.

To be completely accurate, there are 9 photos of decorative gourds and 2 photos of a pumpkin but since they are all members of the same plant family, the generic phrase gourd is used for simplicity's sake.

You can use the photographs in your own teaching materials or as classroom decor. The photographs are in PNG format at 300 dpi and since they were taken by me (The ESL Nexus), you do not have to worry about any copyright issues. You are welcome to use the photos for commercial purposes as long as credit is given. Easy-to-follow terms of use are included.

In the Printable version, each individual page shows a photograph of 1 of the gourds and lists the 5 writing prompts next to it. Students can choose which prompt they want to respond to or you can assign a particular prompt. There are lines on the page for students to write on and an additional lined page is included for students who need more space.

In the Google Drive™ version, each individual slide shows a photograph of 1 of the gourds and lists the 5 writing prompts next to it. As with the Printable version, students can choose which prompt they want to respond to or you can assign a particular prompt. There is a text box on the slide for students to type in and an additional slide with a text box is included for students who need more space.

Add an autumn theme to your classroom and give your students a fun writing task with these gourd photographs and writing prompts!
