Product Description

This is an awesome assignment to finish the semester! I say this is an end of semester debate, but it could work well anytime! I put it at the end as my students have been working on these concepts throughout the year, but this assignment could work well anytime (but students may need a little more help on the research element). Students pick controversial topics, research to gain a full perspective understanding of the issue, then debate against the opposition. I will assign this with groups. In a class of 42 this debate will take about two weeks. Students will spend about 3-5 days researching and preparing. Each actual debate takes approximately an hour. So 10 groups could debate over 5 class periods.

In this document are the following:

  • 11 different controversial issues with conservative and a liberal stance clearly explained
  • a research handout that encourages students to develop a multi-faceted understanding of their stance through research into many different government specific information sources.
  • a debate rubric that organizes a debate through several specific rounds with specific rubric concepts to assess
    • research
    • understanding
    • persuasiveness
    • logic against the opposition
