After having my students learn about the Bill of Rights and the U.S Constitution, I have them email a letter to either a state official (governor, state senator or state house of rep.) or a federal official (President, Fed. Senator or Federal House of Rep., etc.).
In that I have them include certain items that they have learned along (detailed in the directions) with having them ask about certain pending legislation or hot topics current in the state or in the U.S government.
The great part is that MANY if not all of the officials my students wrote to, wrote back or even mailed a typed letter! They loved it.
