This is a fabulous example of differentiated instruction. Having gifted to SPED and ELL students in my classroom, leveling my lesson plans helps me relay content and have students use the content on their own level. This plan is based on the NYS 8th grade social studies curriculum and standards. This is a zip file that includes the PowerPoint and the lesson plan.
The PowerPoint is eye pleasing with great content. It was last revised on 10/3/2013. It has two ability levels of the same content; basic and enriched. The enriched version goes into more detail and the basic version tries to simplify the language used. This works well if you can parallel co-teach. If you do not have a co-teacher you can use the ability level that suits each class you teach.
It has two days of vocabulary included. These are the vocabulary words:
• Capitalism: (definitions are included)
• Social Darwinism:
• Market Economy:
• Command or Planned Economy:
• Mixed Economy:
• Interstate Commerce:
The essential questions appear at the beginning of the PowerPoint and then again at the end. These are the essential questions:
What is the difference between laissez-faire and regulation?
What type of government regulations were put into effect?
What was the purpose of the Sherman Antitrust Act?
These are the headings for the slides:
Opposition to Capitalism (enriched only)
Laissez-faire vs. Regulation
Sherman Antitrust Act: Bigness as a Threat
a political cartoon
