Engage students in real-world argument and rhetoric with the resources in this project. Students are invited to synthesize a range of sources and develop their own original argument on the subject of the proposed border wall on the southern border of the United States.
Following the format of the synthesis-type question on the AP English Language and Composition Exam, this product features a writing prompt and 6 sources taken from a range of media sources. It includes transcripts of the recent speeches given by President Trump, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer.
Because this project follows the format and style of the AP English Language exam, it offers students an opportunity for focused exam preparation, but it could easily be used within a Social Studies class as well, such as Civics, U.S. Government, or a related class focused on current events.
Educators may choose to use the resource as a timed-write to imitate testing conditions, or they can lead the class in a guided analysis of the various documents over the course of a full week.
The sources provided include informational texts, argumentative speeches, and visual media. Hyperlinks have also been inserted to the document so that educators can easily cue up video coverage of the included speeches.
