Grade 6 students are further developing the concept of place value and learning to represent and order numbers to 1 000 000. This powerpoint is a great starting point to introduce the unit. It compares different numbering systems over time, defines and explains the concept of place value, and demonstrates the importance of zero as a place holder in numbers. Students will have opportunities to practice reading numbers, both with the support of a place value chart, and without the chart to foster their independence. Teaching notes are included on each slide, and are displayed in chart form as well at the end of the presentation so you may print them out and refer to them as you go through the presentation with your students.
