There is no room for the romanticization of colonization or the random use of turkeys (an animal that is sacred to many Native American tribes and later became a symbol of a celebration of their genocide) in my Spanish classroom.
Nonetheless, there is room for gratefulness
Since I saw this book in one of the @readingrainbow episodes I’ve been trying to find the Spanish version of it and this year ✨ the book came at the right time.
It is #pueblosoriginarios year in my classroom, so I’ll be reading parts of it the book to different classes it is perfect for a read aloud because it is beautifully illustrated by Erwin Printup Jr.
The book 'Gracias te Damos' was written by cacique Jake Swamp and its message comes from the thanksgiving offering of the Haudenosaunee also known as Iroquois.
The gifts, to which the six nations are thankful for, resonate with my curriculum and what we’ve learning perfectly - Madre tierra, espiritualidad, resistencia y amor ancestral ✨⚡️ What are you doing for #nativeamericanheritagemonth ?
PS: This freebie is for you, with much love, so you can begin descolonizing this holiday too.
