This set of worksheets has been enhanced for gifted and talented students with a focus on mathematical patterns.
It includes an introduction to the "Fibonacci Sequence" and how it appears in nature, but the packet also follows the Common Core Standards for first grade math.
The numbers in the mathematical pattern of the Fibonacci Sequence are used to explain Algebraic Thinking.
Pages 1&2: Cover page and introduction for the teacher.
Page 3: Worksheet #1. Understanding the meaning of the equal sign by determining if a algebraic equation is true or false.
Pages 4-7: Worksheet #2. Fun activities about Trillium, Black-Eyed Susan, Buttercup and Daisy flowers. Problems that involve finding the missing value of an equation.
Pages 8-11: Worksheet #3. Making an equation using numbers from worksheet #2 answers, to review what was learned about Daisies. Includes a space to draw a Daisy.
Looking again at all the numbers used in the packet so far, the student is asked to sort them from lowest to highest. Thus, the Fibonacci Sequence is revealed. The student then fills in missing values in equations again that more clearly demonstrate how the Fibonacci Sequence works.
Pages 12&13: Fibonacci Sequence Special Insert. Clearly states how one can find the Fibonacci Sequence and uses examples of where it is found in nature. Students can test the theory by measuring their own fists.
Pages 14&15: Worksheet #4. Introducing the Commutative and Associative properties of addition. The students read the explanation and examples with the instructor.
Pages 16&17: Worksheet #5. Discerning between commutative and associative properties of operation. Cut-outs of snails are provided for hands on problem solving.
Pages 18: Worksheet #6. Pattern work, counting by twos. Introducing symbols (in this case a flower) as variables in algebraic equations.

Pages 21&22: Worksheet #8. Strategies of solving subtraction problems: splitting two numbers so that one number can be turned into a ten. Provides 6 fill in the blank math problems.
Pages 23-25: Worksheet #9. Introducing 'x' as an unknown variable. Solving for x.
Pages 26-28: Worksheet #10. Seven math problems that involve two components to solve for; a fill-in-the-blank and a variable 'x'. The problems involve adding "two of the same numbers" so that students learn to add the "easy" numbers first.
Pages 29-31: Worksheet #11. Eight strategies that have been introduced in this packet are neatly organized. The student is then prompted to solve a variety of problems using specified strategies, tagged by number. The final worksheet summarizes all that is learned in this Operations and Algebraic Thinking packet.
