Guidelines for Benchmark Assessment:
Assessment is to be given towards the end of Unit 4.
The assessment may be administered whole group, small group, or one-to-one depending on student needs.
Before you begin assessment, let students know the following:
1. “You will read the passage (or they will read the passage)”
2. “Then you will be asked to answer questions about the passage”
Students follow along as teacher reads the passage and questions/answer choices. Students circle the correct answers and write and draw their constructed responses.
Read the passage twice, before you have students answer the questions.
o Read the passage aloud (students follow along)
o Read the questions aloud (students follow along)
o Re-read the passage (students follow along)
o Read the questions/answer choices and student answers
Encourage students to look at the pictures and the text to answer the questions.
Make certain all students have circled/responded to the question before going on to the next assessment item.
