Spelling Word BUMP! is an easy and fun way to keep your students engaged while practicing their spelling words. This partner game is the perfect addition to your reading centers and stations.

Included you will find 30 game boards (one for each of the 30 stories in the 1st grade McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders series) and suggestions to differentiate in your classroom. Each board contains the 10 spelling words that correspond with that week’s story and an additional word that was from a previous lesson. (Note: The first story printable has the 8 spelling words that correlate with “At School” and 2 additional words with a similar spelling pattern.)

You may use these games as a supplement to the following grade 1 McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders stories from Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6:

Needed: a pair of dice, a game board, and 11 linking cubes per player (Each player needs a different color.)

Directions for BUMP! READ THE WORD
Player 1 rolls the dice and finds that sum on the game board. The player reads the word aloud to Player 2. If the word is read correctly, Player 1 places a cube on that word. If the word is read incorrectly, the player’s turn is over. Player 2 continues in the same manner. If Player 2 rolls a number that is already occupied by Player 1, then Player 2 must read the word correctly in order to bump Player 1 off that word. If the word is read incorrectly, the turn is over. If a player lands on a space with his/her own cube, the player may connect a second cube to it which “locks in” the word. Once a word is locked, that word may no longer be used. Play continues until a player uses all of his/her cubes. The player with the most locked words wins the game!

*You may choose to have the students spell the words orally or write them on a
white board. (I use the white boards because it gives the players the opportunity
to check the words together.)
