The “Numbers to 50” activity packet is designed to help students order, represent and compare numbers to 50. Students are introduced to place value in this packet (tens and ones) as a way to compare numbers. This activity packet is designed to meet the specific expectations outlined in the Ontario Mathematics curriculum. This activity packet also includes activities involving the relation of numbers to the anchors of ten and five as well as the printing of numbers to 10 in word form.
The specific expectations or learning goals that this packet addresses are as follows:
- Represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 50;
- Read and print in words whole numbers to ten;
- Demonstrate the concept of conservation of number;
- Relate numbers to the anchors of 5 and 10;
This activity packet contains four sections as well as an additional section containing photographs of demonstration activities. The sections are as follows:
Section 1: Templates
This activity packet contains a tens frame and a hundreds chart that can be used for a variety of the activities found in this activity packet.
Section 2: Lesson and Activities
This packet also contains 9 lessons that help to meet the above mentioned specific expectations/learning goals. Each lesson contains a lesson introduction activity, a core learning activity and a lesson consolidation activity. Each lesson also has a list of materials needed for the lesson (such as activity worksheets or manipulatives) as well as a lesson learning goal or focus for the lesson. A corresponding activity, or set of activities, are also included for each lesson.
Section 3: Additional Activities
The additional activities found in this packet can be used to reinforce the above mentioned learning goals. These activities are not necessarily tied to a particular lesson, but they do correspond with the skills developed in each lesson and can be used to strengthen the skills developed with each of the lessons.
Section 4: Answer Keys
Answer keys are also included for this activity packet. They can be used by students for self-correction or used by the teacher to ensure that students are understanding the skills that each activity develops and strengthens.
