This lesson with task, standards, rubric and rigor is excellent for display that administrators are looking for in the DOE right now. It is complete with shifts, how ells / special needs were addressed etc....
I adapted this/ got the ideas from a free performance task from Georgia titled catipillars and leaves, however this was not rigorous enough for my school. I changed it to snowmen, added a challange question to provide rigor and included publishing paper the students will neatly do their work on. I as well created a rubric for the practice standards and OA standards addressed in the task.
involves a range of mathematical practices from the standards, with emphasis on:
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
4. Model with mathematics.
8. Look for and make use of repeated reasoning.
