Looking for a fun and engaging way to teach students about healthy eating with Canada's Food Guide? This packet is aligned with the Ontario Grade 1 Health curriculum. The curriculum expectations addressed in this packet are:
- C1.1 Explain why people need food to have healthy bodies;
- C2.1 Describe how the food groups in Canada’s Food Guide can be used to make healthy food choices;
- C2.2 Know and recognize cues to hunger, thirst, and the feeling of fullness, and explain how we can use these cues to develop healthy eating habits.
This packet includes 12 lessons, 24 activity worksheets, 5 readings and 3 interactive activities. The lessons included in this packet are as follows:
Lesson 1.1: Introducing the Unit
Lesson 1.2: Foods for Our Bodies
Lesson 1.3: Canada's Food Guide
Lesson 1.4: Vegetables and Fruits
Lesson 1.5: Grain Products
Lesson 1.6: Milk and Alternatives

Lesson 1.8: Benefits of Canada's Food Guide
Lesson 1.9: Eating Healthy
Lesson 1.10: Choosing a Variety

The lessons are intended to be used in a 60-minute health block. Some lessons might take longer than this block, and that is okay. The pacing guide presented in this unit is only a guideline. There are worksheets provided that are intended to provide students with a chance to think deeply about the concepts addressed in the curriculum expectations and the lesson learning goals.
What ASSESSMENTS are included?
Great question! I have tried to include a few assessment tools that can be used to assess student learning and understanding. There are 2 checklists that help to address activities completed in this unit (1 for the four food groups, 1 for sorting foods). There is also a final quiz included in this packet, that requires minimal writing, but allows for you to see what students have learned in the unit.
I am here to help! If you have any questions about this unit, or any of my units, please leave me a question under the Q&A tab below. Or, you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please note that the page count does not reflect the title pages, introduction or answer keys presented in this packet.
